Care concluded held a three days’ seminar on 17 April 2018 in Kismayo regarding how to plan measures to reduce the impacts of drought in Lower-Jubba region of Somalia. The aim of the seminar was to develop capacity of the project activists. The seminar was part of a wider campaign to learn preparations to minimize the impacts of recurrent droughts in the region.
The seminar was attended by different social categories including representatives from the civil society organizations, Kismayo city villages and representatives from the Jubbaland authority. Mr Abdullahi Adan Hassan Care Waamo Chairman has opened the seminar and declared the campaign launched for a three months’ period. After three months another similar will be held to conclude the campaign. The two lectures Hassan Abdullahi Omar and Ahmed Abdullahi Nur (Bursade). The lectures presented the project topics and focused the need to awareness of droughts, the measures needed to mitigate the impacts of droughts, the environmental protection and ways to resolve conflicts peacefully to set aside hostility. During the seminar the participants had an opportunity to discuss the drought causes, the results and how to mitigate the impacts of droughts. The participants had finally come up with some suggestions and check-lists to follow during the implementation period. The participants were divided into groups and the discussions focused some specific issues to minimize the impacts of droughts.
Care Waamo coordinate with Waamo Social Development Organization which is registered in Sweden and the two organizations work with a lot of different developmental projects. This particular project was funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) via Forum Syd. Forum Syd is another Swedish aid organization which is facilitates aid and representing SIDA.
